Argentina is one of those countries that a lot of people never think about going to because they always seem to have Europe or Asia in front of them all the time. However, if you are looking for a great adventure then you will find the country of Argentina is one of the best. If you want to avoid a lot of the crowds, though, you may want to start off with exploring some of the smaller cities in Argentina like Salta. Salta is far from being the largest city in Argentina, but it is definitely a city that has plenty of attractions that will help you in getting to know about the region and the country. With that being said, let us go straight into some of the attractions that we have really come to fall in love with in this smaller city in Argentina, population wise that is.
National University of Salta Museum of Natural Sciences
Now this is a place that is part of the University so you may have to call for hours and make sure you can take a tour before showing up at the doorstep. However, it is a place that will focus on three different aspects of the location will be something that you will like. The museum will cover research that is going on into the sciences in the region and in some aspects globally, teaching is something else that you are going to find here. Since this is part of the university it will have some type of teaching that is going to be happening at almost the entire time. Finally you will notice the location does have various exhibits that you can look at.
The exhibits that you can see may not be the same that you would see in some museums. However, this is a teaching place, as we have emphasized quite a bit. So you need to take this into consideration since it will make a difference in how well you are going to enjoy the area or even if you think the area is not going to be what you want to have or not.

Now this is a museum that you are going to enjoy because it has actually helped in making some very famous, world famous, discoveries of the past of Argentina and in some cases the Inca culture as the discoveries they have made have dated back to the time of the Incas. So this will allow you to explore an area that you normally would not even think about before, but also get a chance to see things that you normally would not see outside of this region. One of the world famous discoveries that has been made by the museum scientist and is preserved is the Children of Llullaillaco.
What else is interesting about the museum is they have been working on perfecting a preservation technique. This is one of those techniques they are using on the Children of Llullaillaco. That conservation technique is the cryopreservation. This is a technique that uses very cold air at 20 below in Centigrade, and then has a variety of other methods that are used. All of these are used to help provide the perfect preservation of the specimens the museum is going to have and will help keep them stabilized properly.
Salta Cabildo
This is a place that has a lot of history to it as a government type of palace more than anything else. However, what you need to realize is this is a building that has been rebuilt at times because of the different things that have happened to it. The building actually was a police headquarters for a long time as well before it was turned into the government buildings.
The claim to fame for the Salta Cabildo is this is the building that Manuel Belgrano would go on to appoint Eustoquio Diaz Velez to the military governor for the region. This helped to solidify this part of the country to the control of the Argentina country. As a traveler the history is interesting, but what you will want to make sure you are present for would be the changing of the guard. The changing of the guard is going to have all the pageantry and pomp that you would expect in the changing of a guard like this. So it will be very easy for you to see this is one of the main attractions that you will like when you are in the region and definitely something that if you have a chance to see you would want to see.
Museum Of Fine Arts In Salta
The Salta Museum of Fine Arts is one of those locations that a lot of people will enjoy visiting because it allows them to have a chance to see the beautiful fine arts that are present from the South American culture as a whole, not just the Salta region. However, what is really nice is the art works that are on display at the fine arts museum start in the 1700’s and go forward to the contemporary period of the settlements and such. So this allows people to see some of the art works that people want to see and know they are seeing pieces of art that showcase South America as a whole.
When you are planning a visit to the Salta Museum of Fine Arts you will notice that this is going to be a place that has plenty of art works that are on a regular exhibit. However, what else you will notice is the museum of fine arts will have works that are going to be used on a rotating exhibit. So you should make sure you are aware of the exhibits that are on display when you are looking at going because it could easily be a unique pieces of work that you are going to enjoy.
Tren a las Nubes
This is a train service that runs mainly through the Salta province, not really the city itself. However, what you need to realize is the service was not meant to be for the passengers originally as a tourist train. This is the fifth highest railway in the world and it is going to be one that you are going to want to go to because it allows you to go along the region and see the different attractions that are present. However, this will make it easier for you to get around the region and see some of the sites that you normally would miss if you are staying in the city and not going to get out.
Now when you are looking at the Tren a las Nubes you will want to make sure you look to see if the service is operational. The service was relaunched in 2015 after a hiatus and has been running since. The round trip for the rail line will take you from leaving the station at 7:05 in the morning and returning at midnight. With that being such a long day, you will find their way back by a different method, which is usually a little bit faster to find a different way to come back to your lodging.
Cathedral of Salta
The Cathedral of Salta is part of the Roman Catholic Church and it is definitely a place that you will want to put on your bucket list of places to visit and take a tour of when you are in Salta. Even if you are not Catholic you will find the Cathedral is one of the most impressive structures that you can find in Salta. The location is simply stunning and allows people to have plenty of worship time if you want to reflect on your life and be able to explore what has happened in the past and help lock down your future.
What else is really impressive about the Cathedral of Salta is the fact this has been a location that has been able to survive quite a long time and continues to be an impressive structure. The Cathedral of Salta has been dedicated by the Catholic Church to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, the people of Argentina have found the building to be so impressive that they have made it into a national monument in 1941. This fact alone will make the Cathedral one of those locations you should stop at and visit when you are in Salta.
